National Research Council Canada’s (NRC) Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) offers grants to small and medium businesses that seek to offer innovative, technology-based products.
Eligible companies must be Canadian-owned, incorporated, and have 500 or fewer full-time employees. Projects must seek to develop and/or commercialize innovative, technology-driven products, and are selected for funding both on the basis of their impact on a firm’s innovation capacity and their “benefit to Canada.” The latter is determined by a number of factors, including a project’s anticipated contribution to revenue, the number of new jobs it is expected to create, any cost savings that it is expected to lead to, and any increases in R&D expenditures it is expected to bring about.
IRAP offers non-repayable grants, the size of which is determined on a project-by-project basis. Contributions are divided into three categories, depending on their size: small contributions are those under $50,000, medium between $50,000 and $150,000, and large over $150,000. The larger a contribution, the greater the benefit to Canada required.
Applications must be initiated by contacting the NRC by telephone at the following toll-free number: 1-877-994-4727. Applicants will be put in personal contact with a local Industrial Technology Advisor, who will assess the application.
More information is available at the NRC’s IRAP page.
